The motto of NSS is “ Not Me, But You ” , which reflects the spirit of selfless service, empathy, and consideration for others above oneself.

NSS Logo

The NSS logo is inspired by the wheel of the Konark Sun Temple, symbolizing continuity, progress, and the cycle of life. It signifies the movement of life in harmony with society and the dedication of volunteers toward social service.

Partnership Village

Every NSS unit adopts a Partnership Village where student volunteers work closely with the local community. This provides real-life exposure to rural issues, encourages participatory development, and strengthens the bond between the campus and community.

NSS Day

NSS Day is celebrated every year on 24th September, marking the launch of the scheme in 1969. It is observed with seminars, rallies, campaigns, and awareness programs across the country.

NSS Regular Activities

120 Hours of Regular activities in a year includes 20 Hours Orientation Programmes, 30 Hours of Campus Work and 70 Hours of Community Works mainly covers campus cleaning, awareness drives on health and environment, blood donation camps, digital literacy, and initiatives promoting social justice, gender equality, and sustainable living.

NSS Camp Activities

The annual Special Camp is a hallmark of NSS, where volunteers stay in adopted villages for 7 days. Camps focus on community development, awareness campaigns, sanitation drives, cultural exchanges, and building solidarity with the local population.

NSS Flag

The NSS flag is Navy Blue in colour, symbolizing the energy and sacrifice of youth. The red wheel at the centre represents the spirit of progress and continuity.

NSS Badge

The NSS badge, worn proudly by volunteers, carries the logo in blue and red. It stands as a mark of honour, discipline, and commitment to the NSS philosophy of selfless service.

NSS Fund

Funds for NSS activities are provided jointly by the Central and State Governments. These funds support regular programmes and special camping activities to ensure the smooth functioning of units.

NSS Programme Officer

The NSS Programme Officer is a teacher or faculty member who guides, motivates, and coordinates the activities of student volunteers. They serve as the bridge between institutions, communities, and government bodies.

NSS Volunteer

An NSS Volunteer is the heartbeat of the programme—dedicated, disciplined, and driven by the motto “Not Me, But You.” Through service, volunteers grow into socially responsible citizens, committed to building a stronger, inclusive, and progressive India.

NSS Manual

The NSS Manual serves as the guiding document for the effective functioning of NSS units. It provides detailed instructions on the philosophy, objectives, organization, and implementation of activities. The manual also explains financial procedures, evaluation methods, and reporting formats, ensuring uniformity and accountability across all units.

NSS Advisory Committee at School Level

Every school with an NSS unit forms an Advisory Committee to guide and monitor its activities.

  • The committee is usually chaired by the Head of the Institution (Principal).
  • Members include the NSS Programme Officer, selected teachers, PTA representatives,
  • community leaders, and sometimes alumni.
  • The committee provides direction, approves annual activity plans, and ensures alignment of NSS activities with community needs and institutional goals.
  • Levels of NSS Organisation

    NSS functions at multiple levels, ensuring wide participation and effective administration:

    • National Level – Managed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
    • State Level – Coordinated by State NSS Cells under the Directorate of Education/Universities.
    • University / Directorate Level – Oversees NSS activities in affiliated colleges/schools.
    • Institutional Level (School/College Units) – Direct implementation by NSS Programme Officers with student volunteers.
